This morning Lilli said Ma-Ma for the very first time. I had been practising with her for quite a while, repeating "MA-MA" over and over, but she was always only smiling at me when I repeated myself over and over again. It was so nice to hear her say it for the first time today.
Lilli has also learned to get from a sitting position into a laying position. She loves to eat the corner pieces of her playmat (I don't like that, who knows what is in it). She can't sit up by herself yet, but I guess it will be just a question of weeks. When we hold down her legs she is able to go from a lying to a sitting position (love those abs).
I also started baby sign language with her. I hope it will help her as she is growing up trilingual (we think). Dh speaks English, I speak German and we hope she will pick up some Spanish on the way (from our maid or daycare or people on the street). The book we have says it is easier for them to learn different languages when the same signs are used in both languages. I have started signing "Milk", "Sleep", "More", "All done", and "Diaper change". I wonder whether you guys are signing, too, or will be signing in the future, so please feel free to share any comments or experiences you have made with signing.

I have thought a lot about baby sign language. I like the idea, but I guess I'll play it by ear whether we use it or not.
Congrats on hearing the words, "Ma Ma" today, that is precious!

I did very basic signing with my daughters. They learned milk, more, bath, all done, thank you, you're welcome, etc. At first they don't use it, but if you are consistent they DO pick it up! My girls still use their signs (one is 2 and the other is almost 4).
Just found your blog while browsing around!
Amazing. I can't believe she's already saying Ma Ma. Some friends of ours did baby sign language. I think it's a great idea.
I bet that was AMAZING!!!
So exciting that Lilli said MaMa! I am trying to use ASL as much as I can, not just baby sign. I talked with our schools director for hearing impaired (i hate that term, as most Deaf individuals find it terribly offensive!) and she said that for payton to really be bi"lingual", I have to sign, w/o voicing the words. I am trying, but it is really challenging for me to remember to communicate in ASL only. I hope it pays off in the long run.
That must be wonderful to hear her say Mama. I think baby sign language is great. i knew my alphabet at 3. I am teaching my son italian. He knows a few phrases. I found some videos to order for him called Muzzy. It is put out by BBC and they come it all different languages including German.
I have done sign with both of my kids and I love it- I think it can be very effective if done right. I think it helps to cut down on little ones frustration when trying to communicate. Before I was a mommy I was a developmental intereventionist, in normal language that means I worked with developmentally delayed children and I used sign on an every day basis with children. I wish you the best:)
